Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler Celebrates Daniel Abt’s Formula E Victory Premiere in Mexico

Daniel Abt is winner of the Mexico E-Prix. After the 25-year-old had previously crossed the finish line first at the season opener in Hong Kong, but was subsequently disqualified through no fault of his own due to an irregularity in the car passport, the Kempten born and bred driver exuberantly celebrated his victory premiere in the ABB FIA Formula E in the fifth of twelve races this season. Team mate Lucas di Grassi also had reason to celebrate. The defending Champion produced a strong drive to race from last place on the grid to ninth in the points.

“That really was long overdue – for Daniel and the team,” congratulated Prof. Peter Gutzmer, Chief Technology Officer at Schaeffler. “Daniel has performed splendidly this season. As of today I believe in a fair racing God. Congratulations to our entire Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler team. We swallowed the setbacks, worked hard and demonstrated once again today the great potential in our transmission. At the finish line Daniel had a healthy 6.4-second advantage – this needs no further explanation. Congratulations also go to our Champion. Lucas drove brilliantly into the points from last on the grid and also set the fastest race lap.”

Di Grassi was twelfth in qualifying, but started the race last and also served a 5-second penalty in the race because the team had to open the inverter seal in one of his race cars to make a repair after the last race. According to the regulations this is accompanied by a grid penalty. The Brazilian produced a strong and flawless drive to clinch two points for ninth place and another extra point for setting the fastest race lap.

Technology ‘made by Schaeffler’ is found in the new Audi e-tron FE04. Together with Audi, Schaeffler engineers developed the heart of the car: the combination of motor and gearbox. Schaeffler is official technology partner to the Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler squad in the innovative electric racing series. Almost four months ago, the team celebrated winning the drivers’ championship 2016/2017 with Lucas di Grassi. Schaeffler also underlines its position as electromobility pioneer on the race track since the first season 2014/2015. Since opening up the technical regulations for the second season 2015/2016, specialists from Schaeffler developed the transmission for the race car of the only German team. Formula E is one of the many fields of operation that Schaeffler uses to work on visionary and sustainable mobility for tomorrow.
